Day 32: Pick Website Builder and Domain Name

During the next few days we'll be focusing solely on creating your personal website that shows off both your personality and your work.

There are a lot of things that need to be done to get this launched!

  1. Deciding on a website builder
  2. Setting up your domain
  3. Deciding on your brand guidelines (what colors, font, etc)
  4. Creating your website
  5. Displaying the work you've completed during the program
  6. Numerous reviews and iterations
  7. Sharing it with your friends and adding it to your resumes

It sounds like a lot and it is! But, we'll break it down into small manageable steps and help you along the way.

Today, the only thing that you have to do is decide on a website builder that you would like to use and what domain name you want to reserve for yourself.

For website builders, we recommend that you choose from one of the following:

  • Squarespace
  • Tilda (this may show up on your browser in Russia...once you login it will be in English. We're not sure why it does this. We use Tilda for the Radify Labs site and we promise it's legit)
  • Wix
  • Weebly

Explore those website builders and see which ones have a template that you like the most. Go ahead and create an account and start exploring different themes.

Don't pay for any plans yet! Radify will cover your first year's subscription. Tomorrow we'll cover what you need to do to get set up.

Once you have chosen which website editor you want to proceed with, start thinking about what domain name you would like to reserve. We recommend using the Google Domains checker but any domain name checker will work.

What happens if your fistnamelastname.com is taken? Get a little creative! Trying looking for a different extension such as .org, .io, or .co

You can use dashes: firstname-lastname.com

You can use a middle initial.

Keep trying different versions until you find something that is open. Once you find one you like, write it down. Just like the website builder plans, don't pay for your domain just yet! We're going to cover the first year of the domain for each student and tomorrow we'll go over that whole process.
